Coping with Global News and Doomscrolling

While being informed about world events is admirable, sometimes it can be taken too far. You might find yourself struggling emotionally (anxiety, sadness, anger, etc.), mentally (difficulty concentrating and making decisions, etc.) and physically (aches and pains, difficulty sleeping, etc.). These symptoms can indicate that you’re overwhelmed with upsetting news. They can also signal that you’re engaging in doomscrolling—continually scrolling through negative news—often without even knowing it.

The Mental Health Foundation recognises how mental health can be affected by being overwhelmed by global events1 and by doomscrolling.2 Its website provides information on their impact; and it has come up with positive steps one can take to protect one’s mental health, including limiting phone use.

The Mental Health Foundation has also produced two posters—one for each of the sets of tips—that can be found at the links above. Also available at these links are further resources for those suffering from being overwhelmed or doomscrolling.
