Workplace Mental Health

Workplace Mental Health

The 2022 Scottish Census revealed that “The percentage of people reporting a mental health condition in the census increased from 4.4% in 2011 to 11.3% in 2022. This was the largest increase across condition types.”1 Such statistics are concerning for employers, as employees’ poor mental health can have a detrimental effect on productivity.

World Mental Health Day was on 10 October 2024, and this year’s theme is Workplace Mental Health. In keeping with the day and the theme, the Mental Health Foundation publicized its guide How to support mental health at work. This helpful guide gives advice on how employees can support their own mental health at work, as well as that of their colleagues. It also provides guidance for employers and managers in promoting good mental health among employees.

The publication states that after reading it, you should be able to

  1. “Understand ways to manage your own mental health at work.
  2. Know how to reach out to a colleague in distress.
  3. Understand how you can work with others to make your workplace more mentally healthy for everyone.
  4. Understand how organisations and individuals should use the Equality Act and make use of reasonable adjustments.
  5. Understand how your organisation can support their employees’ mental health.”2
